Do you need treatment?

Ear wax blockages affect around 1 in 20 adults and 1 in 3 older people. If you recognise any of the signs below, professional removal can provide immediate relief.

Muffled or reduced hearing

Feeling of fullness

Tinnitus or ringing

Earache or discomfort

Dizziness or balance issues

Ear discharge

Itchiness inside the ear

Cough (in rare cases)

IMPORTANT WARNING

Never attempt to remove ear wax with cotton buds, ear candles, or sharp objects. These push wax deeper and risk damaging the delicate ear canal or eardrum. Always seek professional removal.

Three clinically proven methods

TREATMENTS

Our trained clinicians will assess your ears and recommend the most appropriate technique for your individual needs.

PRECISION TECHNIQUE

Manual removal

Fine instruments are used to carefully extract wax without water or suction. Targeted and precise — ideal for hard or adherent wax and can be combined with other methods.

GOLD STANDARD

Microsuction

A gentle, low-pressure suction device removes wax under direct visualisation — the same technique used by ENT consultants in hospitals. No water involved.

   Results in a single session

✅   Clinician views the canal throughout

   Suitable for most patients

GENTLE AND EFFECTIVE

Irrigation

Warm water at body temperature is gently directed into the ear canal to flush out wax. Comfortable and well-tolerated, especially with softening drops used beforehand.

Common questions

FAQS

Does ear wax removal hurt?

No — when carried out by a trained clinician, the procedure is generally comfortable and well-tolerated. Microsuction produces some noise and a mild sensation. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how quick and easy it is.

Do I need to prepare my ears before the appointment?

We highly recommend using olive oil ear drops 2–3 times daily for 3–5 days beforehand if possible. This softens the wax and makes removal easier. If you can't do this in advance, don't worry — we can still assess and often treat your ears in the same visit.

How long does the appointment take?

A standard appointment takes around 20–30 minutes, including the examination, removal, and aftercare advice. Very impacted wax may take slightly longer.

Is microsuction safe?

Yes — microsuction is a safe ear wax removal method is the gold standard used by ENT consultants in hospitals. It involves no water and allows the clinician to view the ear canal throughout, making it one of the safest and most effective options available.

Yes — microsuction is suitable for patients with a perforated eardrum or grommets, as no water is used. Irrigation is not suitable in these cases. Please let us know when booking so we can prepare appropriately.

Can I have treatment with a perforated eardrum?

Will my hearing improve straight away?

Most patients notice an immediate and significant improvement following treatment. Some mild, temporary fluctuations in the hours after removal are normal as the ear canal adjusts — this settles quickly.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly with us — no GP referral required. Simply call us or book online to secure your appointment.

This varies between individuals. Some people only ever need treatment once, while others build up wax regularly and benefit from a routine appointment every 6–12 months. Hearing aid users often find more frequent visits helpful. We'll advise based on what we find.

How often will I need ear wax removal?

Can I get my ear wax removal done through my GP?

As far as we are aware most of the local GPs do not do ear wax removal anymore but you may of course inquire with your GP prior to booking with us.
